What We Do

Camden Listening and Counselling Centre provides a listening service to people in crisis and a counselling service for those needing longer term support.

Counselling - What you need to know

  • Counselling is a two-way working process between you and your counsellor
  • You are assured of strict confidentiality in talking to your counsellor. Information will never be shared with anyone without your full knowledge and agreement. However, in extraordinary circumstances, for example, if there are issues or concerns affecting your own Health & Safety, if actual intention of harming another person is expressed, or there is evidence of current sexual abuse against another, it may be necessary to involve others in the public caring sector. This is in accordance with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy ethical guidelines.
  • Your counsellor will work with you to seek new ways of looking at any problems you may bring; together you will explore the options open to you in dealing with any difficulties you may be experiencing
  • Following an assessment, counselling may be offered up to a maximum of 24 sessions. Your counsellor will expect to see you for 50 minutes at the same time, on same day, each week, as will be agreed between you.
  • It would not be appropriate to attend a counselling session if under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Special circumstances may apply if you are on a recovery treatment programme or have been referred for issues dealing with recovery. However, you will not be permitted into the centre if you have been drinking or have taken drugs or medication that affects your behaviour adversely.
  • If your counsellor feels it would be helpful for you to contact another agency, the matter will be discussed with you.
  • All our counsellors are either fully trained, qualifying for accreditation by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy or on a recognised diploma course: all work under supervision.

What we do not do

  • Counselling, however valuable, cannot guarantee results, nor can your counsellor be held responsible for your actions or reactions alone or with others.
  • We do not counsel couples, adolescents or families: we can advise on specialist centres where help can be obtained;
  • This service is not open to students on counselling training courses;
  • If you are dissatisfied or wish to make any complaint about a counsellor or how the Centre is managed, please contact the receptionist who will advise you of the correct procedure.

We have over 20 qualified volunteer counsellors with specialisms including:

  • Psychodynamic
